The Borrowed Why

Many of us hold a why that sounds right but was handed to us by a parent, an industry, or a crowd we wanted to impress. This episode shows you how to trace where your why came from, test it without an audience, and rebuild in a different order: who first, then what, then why.

What You'll Hear

  • A why built before a who is built on borrowed ground. A reason has to come from somebody, so find out who.
  • Trace it. Ask whose voice first said this was important, and remember that most borrowed whys were handed down out of love.
  • Test it. Remove every audience and ask whether you would still want it if nobody ever knew.
  • Reorder it. Who supplies the soil, what is the right seed, and why is what grows. You do not have to rewrite your past to do this.

Favorite Line

From the inside, a borrowed dream feels exactly like someone else's life.

Reflection Question

If you removed every person you want to impress, which of your goals would still be standing?

Final Thought

You do not have to throw away what you have built. You get to check the title on it, and decide on purpose what is yours.

And, as always, I love you much!
