Good At It Is Not the Same as Yours

Being good at something and owning it are two different questions, and most of us only ever get asked the first one. This episode explains how skill quietly crowds out ownership, why success makes the question harder to ask, and why asking it is not the same as quitting.

What You'll Hear

  • Skill answers "Can I do this well?" Ownership answers "Is this mine?" They are not the same question.
  • The world rewards what you are good at, so you keep getting more of it, and nobody ever checks whether you chose it.
  • The better you get, the harder it is to ask. Treat a long pattern of flat wins as information, not a diagnosis.
  • There are three honest answers: yes, partly, or no. None of them requires burning anything down.

Favorite Line

You can be genuinely excellent at something that is genuinely not yours.

Reflection Question

What are you very good at that you have never actually asked yourself whether you chose?

Final Thought

You can be really good at something and still be allowed to ask whether it is yours. Both can be true.
